ICELAND

Iceland has some amazing diving experiences, many of which are unique to this beautiful country. Some of the dive sites in Iceland have been voted amongst the best in the world, including the incredible Silfra Ravine, where the visibility is the best that divers will ever come across. As the only place in the world where divers can dive between two continental plates, dive in a volcano and dive in a geothermal chimney, it is no wonder that Iceland is firmly on the map as one of the best destinations to dive on earth.

Iceland Highlights

The Silfra Ravine, in the Thingvellir National Park, has been voted one of the top three fresh water sites to dive in the whole world. It is a deep crack that lies between the American and Eurasian continents, a result of the plates slowly drifting apart from each other. Divers here are literally able to touch both continents as they swim along, the only place in the world where this is possible. This is a truly unique diving encounter. The ravine is filled with very cold melted glacier water, which provides some of the best visibility divers will ever experience. It is possible to see for up to 150 metres at this incredible dive site. This unreal dive has three main sections- the Silfra Hall, the Silfra Cathedral and the Silfra Lagoon, an ethereal cavern filled with the most intense shades of blue. The water in the Silfra Ravine is so pure that divers can actually drink it during their dive. This really is a one in a million diving opportunity.

Strýtan has been voted one of the five most incredible dive sites in the world. This one of a kind dive site is the only place on earth where it is possible to dive in a geothermal chimney. The hot water coming out of the spring is full of minerals, which attract hundreds of cod. Divers at Strýtan can actually feel the heat of the water shooting up the 55 metre chimney. It is another unique diving experience only possible in the beautiful country of Iceland.

Gardur is a pretty fishing town in the South of Iceland. There is a good dive site nearby called Gardurinn, where divers can expect to see wolf fish, monkfish, white beaked dolphin and even killer whales! This dive site is perfect for beginners, as there are shallow areas of 3-6 metres. This is one of the most popular dive sites in Iceland.

The recently discovered Kleifarvatn Thermal area provides yet another amazing diving experience unique to Iceland. Divers can actually go inside a volcano at this must-see site. The dive, which ranges in depth from 8 to 12 meters, goes through an active thermal area, and divers will be surrounded by bubbles coming from a geyser. This is one of the most exciting diving experiences in the world.

The magnificent WW2 shipwreck, El Grillo, sank near to the fishing town of Seyðisfjörður in the very east of Iceland. The 150 metre long boat lies in a fjord, and has created a wonderful diving site. The dive ranges in depth between 28 and 45 metres. This dive is often included in diving holidays to Iceland.
