FIJI

The beautiful islands of Fiji have so much to offer for holiday makers, including fabulous paradise beaches, delicious food, friendly people and beautiful walks. For those looking to enjoy an excellent diving holiday, the islands are also in a league of their own. The 300 plus islands and atolls of Fiji are home to literally thousands of top notch dive sites, where divers can enjoy incredible visibility of up to 40 metres, vibrant corals and varied marine creatures. Known as the ‘Soft Coral Capital of the World’, the country has some immensely colourful life in its underwater world. But the extent of Fiji’s incredible diving sights is not limited to corals. There is a huge diversity of fish, mammals and invertebrates that keep divers coming back to these waters time and time again. Grey reef sharks, hammerheads and bull sharks are frequently seen on scuba trips, and dolphins are prevalent here. Migratory whales often pass through the Fijian waters, including Humpbacks, Orca and Sperm whales. Divers can expect to see manta rays, barracuda, trevally and turtles, making these islands a true diving paradise.

Diving here is suitable for a range of abilities. There are some tranquil areas that are perfect for learning to scuba dive, but there are also advanced sites with sheer deep walls and wild currents that are more suited to experienced divers. The Fiji archipelago is surrounded by a huge reef, which receives strong currents that encourage the growth of life and keep the water clear for diving. The islands are home to protected waters, shallow lagoons, coral gardens and steep drop offs, providing variety for divers wishing to see a range of sites during their holiday. It is possible to encounter something new on every dive! The warm waters (25˚C in winter and 30˚C in summer) ensure that diving can take place all year round.

There are dive shops scattered all over the country’s islands, making taking to the water an easy activity to fit into a holiday to Fiji. The islands also have many luxury diving resorts, complete with their own dive schools and equipment. Another way to make the most of Fiji’s incredible diving is to join a live-aboard diving boat. This method allows divers to access remote dive sites, and make the most of the time on their diving holiday in Fiji.

Fiji Highlights

Nadi tends to be the first port of call for visitors to Fiji, as there is a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets, as well as restaurants, nightlife and good shops. This is a good place to come to find a dive tour, as there are companies offering live-aboard diving boats, and touts recommending dive resorts.
Taveuni Island is world renowned for its exceptional diving. Some of the most beautiful coral formations on earth are found here, helping to give Fiji its name of the ‘Soft Coral Capital of the World’. Explore the Somosomo Straits and see the amazing Rainbow Reef, a 30km long stretch of multi-coloured corals, where barracudas, sharks and manta rays are commonly spotted. This area is without a doubt one of the best places on earth to dive.
Kadavu has some of the best diving sites in Fiji, and also benefits from a relaxing laid back feel on the island and its resorts. The Great Astrolabe Reef remains the most famous dive site of the area, and for good reason. The 100 km long reef is the fourth largest barrier reef in the world, and offers divers a chance to see some amazing hard coral slopes in a huge range of colours. There is enormous variety amongst the dive sites here, including passages, submerged pinnacles and manta ray cleaning stations. The range of different things to see makes Kadavu one of the best places in the world to go for a fantastic diving vacation.
Viti Levu may not have much to offer in terms of variety of diving sites compared to some of the other Fijian islands. But it does have one unique and special diving experience unlike no other on earth- feeding the sharks at Shark Reef. Not for the feint-hearted, this dive offers experienced divers the chance to come face to face with bull sharks, tiger sharks and many other species. This dive is not surprisingly known as the ‘Best shark dive in the world’.
